Former high school teammates and college rivals Trae Waynes (left) and Melvin Gordon are poised to both be first-round picks.
When the Minnesota Vikings and San Diego Chargers meet at TCF Bank Stadium this Sunday, it won't be the first time Vikings cornerback Trae Waynes and Chargers running back Melvin Gordon share the field.
Waynes (11th overall) and Gordon (15th overall) were both first-round picks in this year's draft. Both played college football at Big Ten schools (Waynes was a Michigan State Spartan; Gordon a Wisconsin Badger), and both players went to Bradford High School in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Waynes and Gordon, best friends since ninth grade, knew this moment would come one day.
"We've probably [talked about this] since we were freshmen [in high school]," Gordon said, per ESPN's Ben Goessling. "We used to play in varsity reserve games, so [it] probably [started] on the buses back home from those games."
Gordon is San Diego's leading rusher this season with 139 yards (4.6 yards per carry) through two games. Waynes, on the other hand, is still waiting for his chance to start for the Vikings. We'll see if he gets the call to go head-to-head with his high school teammate on Sunday.
"It'll be great," Waynes said, via ESPN. "It's something we always, I guess, dreamed about, starting from high school and into college and now here."
