With the start of the 2015 regular season just a month away, the clock is ticking for the New York Giants and Eli Manning to agree to a long-term contract extension. Manning is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2015 season.
As Giants co-owner John Mara reiterated on Monday, there is truly no deadline to get a contract done and a deal can eventually be finalized shortly after the start of the regular season. However, he hopes to get a contract extension done before then, and he is confident that a deal will be reached.
"We're going to try to lock him up," Mara said in an interview with WFAN on Monday, per the New York Daily News. "We're still having discussions with his agent and our goal is to still try to reach a contract with him, hopefully before the regular season starts or as soon thereafter as possible. There is no deadline on it right now."
On Monday, a report surfaced that Manning is looking to become the highest paid player in the NFL. This report seems questionable. Around the time of big contract negotiations, a lot of misinformation is purposely leaked to the media for leverage purposes. Just look at the media attention surrounding Phillip Rivers' contract status before he signed his recent extension.
Manning will certainly be a Giant in 2015 and there's a strong chance that he will be the team's franchise signal caller for years to come. After all of the contract jockeying back and forth, a deal is likely to get done over the course of the next month.
