NEW YORK -- The New York Jets have brought in quarterback Matt Flynn for a physical Friday, but did not work him out as they consider signing a veteran to back up starter Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick was thrust into the starting role when Geno Smith's jaw was broken by a punch from then-teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali in the Jets' locker room Tuesday. Smith had surgery Thursday to insert plates and screws in his jaw, which is not wired shut, and he is expected to miss 6-10 weeks.

With rookies Bryce Petty and Jake Heaps the only other quarterbacks on the roster to back up Fitzpatrick, the Jets are exploring veteran options.

The 30-year-old Flynn was released earlier this week by New England. He has also been with Green Bay (twice), Seattle, Oakland and Buffalo.
