When offensive line coach Bill Callahan makes a decision, the smart head coaches tend to listen. After all, he has coached four top-nine rushing attacks in the last six years. One week into training camp, the Redskins have decided to move rookie first-rounder Brandon Scherff from right tackle to right guard.
With Scherff at right guard, the Redskins inserted second year lineman Morgan Moses at right tackle and Spencer Long was sent to the bench. Moses had an excellent offseason, and it looks like it might pay off. Scherff practiced at right tackle throughout the entirety of the Redskins' spring practices and the first week of camp, but this move could end up sticking.
"Could be. Could very well be," head coach Jay Gruden said to reporters when asked if Scherff and Moses could prove to be the long-term pair on the right side. "We're just going to go out here and give these guys the reps and let the exhibition games take care of themselves, and we'll make our decisions for [the season opener]. But that's a definite possibility, with Morgan at right tackle and Brandon at right guard."
The pair will be put to potentially their most difficult task right away. In the first preseason game, the Redskins take on the Texans. This means that Scherff and Moses will have to line up directly across from Mr. J.J. Watt.
