The running back formerly known as "CJ2K" is one of the most notable names left on the free agent market. After playing the 2014 season with the Jets, Chris Johnson has found it difficult to find work this offseason.
After not receiving much interest at all on the open market, Johnson's agent is taking matters into his own hands. According to Randy Getlin, Johnson's agent has been in contact with the Dallas Cowboys.
Although the Cowboys haven't expressed any interest in Johnson at all this offseason, Getlin is likely just trying to connect the dots. After allowing DeMarco Murray to leave in free agency, the Cowboys' running back depth chart is thin. They will enter training camp with a variety of running backs including Joseph Randle, Darren McFadden, Lance Dunbar and Ryan Williams.
None of the four backs have proven that they can handle lead back duties for an extended period of time. McFadden was effective as the Raiders' lead back in 2010, but he has struggled with injuries and inconsistent play since.
Johnson is certainly no longer the same back who got a nickname after his 2,000-yard rushing season, but he's still got some juice left. In 2014, he racked up 663 rushing yards on just 155 carries for a 4.3 yards per carry average. He also added 151 yards receiving. If we move past a couple weeks of training camp and no one has emerged in the Cowboys' backfield, don't be surprised if they sign Johnson to a veteran's minimum contract.
