The San Diego Padres announced on Friday that Omar Minaya was named senior vice president of baseball operations.

Minaya comes over from the New York Mets, where he served in a similar post as well as general manager from September of 2004 through the end of the 2010 season.

"We're excited to add Omar to our staff," said Padres GM Josh Byrnes. "His experience, knowledge, evaluative skills and connections throughout the industry will be invaluable for us."

The native of the Dominican Republic also served as general manager for the Montreal Expos from 2002-04, and was an assistant GM with the Mets from 1997-2002.
