Higdon takes Motherwell to second in SPL table

Dundee, Scotland – Michael Higdon's brace helped Motherwell 1 win over Dundee United at Tannadice Park on Saturday, moving the visitors past Celtic and into second place in the league table.

It took 14 minutes for Motherwell to snatch the lead as Tom Hateley's low cross found Keith Lasley inside the area and he lashed a shot past goalkeeper Dusan Pernis.

United's goalkeeper was responsible for handing Motherwell its second goal just before the break when he cleared the ball straight to Higdon and could only tip his shot off the post and into the net when he tried to atone for the error.

Nicky Law helped the visitors stretch their lead to 3-0 when he was brought down inside the penalty area by Garry Kenneth, allowing Higdon to send Pernis the wrong way from the spot.

Jon Daly scored from close range 13 minutes from time for United, but it offered little consolation for the hosts, who were clearly second best on the day.

Rangers 1, Hibernian 0

Glasgow, Scotland - Rangers claimed a ninth straight win in SPL play on Saturday at Ibrox as the club held off Hibernian for a 1-0 triumph.

Steven Whittaker missed a penalty kick in first-half stoppage time that could have put Rangers into the lead, but he was bailed out by Kyle Lafferty's second-half tally which came in the 67th minute.

Rangers now holds a nine-point lead on second-place Motherwell with Celtic sitting 10 points back but holding two games in hand.

Inverness 2, St Mirren 1

Inverness, Scotland - Gregory Tade's goal in the 78th minute propelled Inverness to a 2-1 win over St Mirren on Saturday, helping the club snap a two-game losing skid.

St Mirren seized the initiative in the 23rd minute through Marc McAusland, but his opener was canceled out eight minutes later by Andrew Shinnie, with Tade providing the winning goal to move Inverness within one point of climbing off the bottom of the table.

St Johnstone 2, Kilmarnock 1

Kilmarnock, Scotland - Kilmarnock lost for the third straight time on Saturday as Cillian Sheridan's goal in the 73rd minute helped St Johnstone to a 2-1 win over Killie.

Francisco Sandaza put St Johnstone in front after 21 minutes with Manuel Pascali answering before halftime for Kilmarnock.

But Sheridan tallied his fourth goal of the season in the 73rd minute to lift St Johnstone into fourth place.
