Conservative talk show host Steve Deace says he would consider a bid for U.S. Senate in Iowa if Republican Rep. Steve King does not enter the race.
"I have been approached by people across Iowa to consider this race," he told Fox News. "I have been approached by people outside of Iowa to consider this race. The best path to victory (in the 2014 Senate contest) is for an established conservative like Steve King to run for the Senate."
He said the party needs someone who can "unite the Rand Paul faction and the Mike Huckabee faction of the grassroots activists."
Deace said King is uniquely qualified to do that and win the seat being vacated by Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin.
The Iowa-based radio show host said Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds cannot united the state party. Deace claimed neither can "anybody connected to (Governor) Terry Branstad."
If King does not enter the Senate contest, Deace said he must weigh he can better serve as host of his radio show (which has grown to 60 stations nationwide in 18 months) or as a member of the Senate. That deliberation, Deace said, would involve conversations with his wife, Amy, and a great deal of prayer.
So far the only announced candidate for the Senate seat is Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley.
