BROADVIEW, Ill. -- Police have arrested about two dozen demonstrators who stopped a van containing deportees as it left a federal detention center in the Chicago suburb of Broadview.
Officers on Tuesday arrested the protesters as supporters yelled "no deportations today." The van was going to O'Hare International Airport for a flight out of the United States. The van went back into the center.
Demonstrators also sat in the street and chanted "Illinois is not Arizona." Arizona recently approved a measure that would make it a crime under state law to be in the U.S. illegally.
The demonstrators were part of a group that had camped overnight outside the detention center.
