America's status as a leading nation is in danger if the country as a whole is unable to work through the challenges it faces, Mitt Romney warns in his new book.

The former Massachusetts governor, a 2008 Republican presidential candidate, outlines a formula for success for the U.S. in his book, "No Apology," which will be released early next month.

"We'll be strong, free, prosperous and safe," Romney writes in an exclusive excerpt obtained by Fox News. "But if we do not face them, I suspect the United States will become the France of the 21st century, still a great country, but no longer the world's leading nation."

Romney urges Americans to be proud of the country's superpower status and "aim unabashedly at staying ahead."
