'Being Latino' This Week on Facebook

This week on Being Latino on Facebook we answered the question, “What are undocumented immigrants really paying for?” Well, we didn’t answer it, but we learned that the $11.2 billion they inject into the U.S. economy could pay for many things, including 132 years of congressional salaries. Perhaps the members of Congress should keep that in mind the next time the DREAM Act comes up for a vote.

Speaking of the DREAM Act, one writer shared a very touching personal account of his teacher/student relationship with a young man who is now a DREAM activist. A young man who was brought to the U.S. by his parents and grew up as American as anyone who was born here. He has found the courage to come out as undocumented to fight the injustice he faces.

Another writer responded to the negative comments shared by some readers when Being Latino congratulated the LGBT community for winning the right to marry in New York. They took the congratulations as a personal attack on their beliefs in an outright display of hypocrisy, failing to relate to a group that has been just as marginalized and disenfranchised as Latinos.

Is it hypocrisy or is it fear of the unknown? Perhaps both.

Fear itself takes many forms.  It can incite fear. And it can also inspire, as it does for artist, Adrian “Viajero” Roman, who said of the unknown, “the unknown is what keeps me traveling, that’s what keeps me talking to people and interacting.”

That’s art, exploring the unknown and imagining the unimagined. Case in point: wedding dresses made out of toilet paper . Art is truly in the eye of the beholder.
