'Being Latino' This Week On Facebook

This has been a special week for Being Latino on Facebook as we turned the terrific twos on Monday, May 9th. Two terrific years of intelligent discourse from all sides of the varied Latino spectrum and still going strong, inciting strong opinions as engaging writing will do.

The strength of opinions was evident as one fan commented in response to an article about Donald Trump entitled, Morally Bankrupt: "The Birther movement is nothing but pure racism. There are people in this country that are not comfortable with a Black man being the leader of the country. Just because we have a Black president does not mean racism has ended in the U.S. No other president previous to Obama had been asked to prove his citizenship. Why Obama? Because his name sounds Muslim? And Muslim is not American? Muslims can also be Americans, even though Obama is not Muslim, he is Christian."

Not quite a Latino issue to be sure, but Being Latino isn't about focusing on issues that affect only Latinos. We're not inextricably tied to just our roots; we're part of and responsible for a large world. Being Latino is understanding that in order to make this world a better place for ourselves, we must make it a better place for all. We must stand up and speak out wherever and whenever we see injustice because sitting back and doing nothing can kill us in more ways than one.
