Sam Smith had a big night at the 2016 Academy Awards, nabbing the Oscar for Best Song for “Writing’s on the Wall” for the film “Spectre.”

During his acceptance speech, the singer said: “I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen, and he said that no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar, and if this is the case, even if it isn’t the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world.”

Unfortunately for Smith, that wasn't entirely accurate. Openly gay Oscar winning writer Dustin Lance Black, who won for the 2009 movie “Milk,”  took to Twitter writing: “Hey @SamSmith, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé. Here’s a start.”

He then embedded the YouTube video of his Oscar acceptance speech.  The post garnered over 6,000 retweets-and-counting, plus some pretty funny memes.

Sir Elton John also won for the "The Lion King"’s “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.” Apparently, Sir Elton felt the love and did not feel the need to correct Smith.
