Filmmakers Alejandro G. Iñarritu and Emmanuel Lubezki continued their hot streak at the Academy Awards with two more nominations.
The Mexican duo and longtime collaborators took home the Oscars for best director and cinematography, respectively, for “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” at last year’s award show and are trying to do the same again next month for “The Revenant.”
The film, which follows a frontiersman’s path of vengeance against those who left him for dead after a bear mauling, leads the 88th annual Academy Awards with 12 nominations, including best film.
"I am in London and just heard the good news! We gave it our all on this film and this appreciation from the Academy means a lot to me and my colleagues who made it possible. Champagne and Mezcal will run tonight!" Iñarritu told Fox News Latino in a statement.
Iñarritu will face challenges from Adam McKay (“The Big Short”); George Miller (“Mad Max: Fury Road”), Lenny Abrahamson (“Room”) and Tom McCarthy (“Spotlight”).
Lubezki’s category includes Ed Lachman (“Carol”), John Seale (“Mad Max: Fury Road”), Roger Deakins (“Sicario”) and Robert Richardson (“The Hateful Eight”).
Miller's "Mad Max: Fury Road" followed with 10 nominations, including best picture. Ridley Scott's sci-fi epic "The Martian" landed 7 nominations, including best picture, but no best director nod for Scott.
The other seven nominees in the best picture category are: “The Big Short,” “Bridge of Spies,” “Brooklyn,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “The Martian,” “Room” and “Spotlight.”
This is the second year that saw all-white artists nominated in the acting category. The acting nominees notably omitted Idris Elba for "Beasts of No Nation" and Benicio Del Toro for "Sicario," giving the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences an awkward repeat of the "#OscarsSoWhite" backlash from last year. The hashtag quickly made a comeback this year, with one person joking the nominations mirrored the Democratic field running for president.
Following his win at the Golden Globes, Leonardo DiCaprio received a best actor nod for “The Revenant.” Also in the category are Bryan Cranston for “Trumbo”; Matt Damon in “The Martian”; Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs” and Eddie Redmayne for “The Danish Girl.”
The best actress field is led by favorite Brie Larson for "Room," along with Jennifer Lawrence ("Joy"), Cate Blanchett ("Carol"), Saoirse Ronan ("Brooklyn") and Charlotte Rampling ("45 Years").
Additionally, Colombia received its first ever Oscar nomination in the best foreign film category for “Embrace of the Serpent.” Jordan also received its first-ever nomination for “Theeb;” Denmark (“A War”), France (“Mustang”) and Hungary (“Son of Saul”) also received nominations.
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos congratulated "Embrace of the Serpent" director Ciro Guerra for his movie and getting the country's first nomination.
"Great news for Colombian film! "Embrace of the Serpent" by Ciro Guerra was nominated for the Oscar Awards @TheAcademy," he tweeted in Spanish, followed by sharing the film's trailer. "#ElAbrazoDeLaSerpiente: Colombian talent with the most powerless landscapes of our country. If you haven't seen it, go!"
Spanish costume designer Paco Delgado received his second Academy Awards nomination for his work in “The Danish Girl.” He faces challenges from Sandy Powell – who is nominated for “Carol” and “Cinderella”, Jenny Beavan for “Mad Max: Fury Road” and Jacqueline West for “The Revenant.”
