Ben Stiller: Derek Zoolander's 'Blue Steel' stare 'comes from the back of your skull'

Fifteen years after the original "Zoolander," male models Derek Zoolander and Hanzel return for “Zoolander 2,” something star Ben Stiller wasn't sure would ever happen.
“For a while I thought we never were going to do it… We wrote a script back in 2005 and 2010 again and then it didn’t come together,” Stiller told FOX411. “I feel like we got to a place where we liked what we had as a script so we decided to go for it.”
Stiller said the characters have not benefited from the time away.
“I don’t think they’ve gotten wiser, but they’ve gotten older.”
It has, however, been easier to secure celebrities for cameos for the sequel.
“The first time around nobody really knew what we were doing and we were just kind of on our own," he said.
He says it has also been east re-acquainting himself with Zoolander's "Blue Steel" look.
“It’s really all about the energy that comes from the back of your skull, through your eyes and just really searing," he said. "You have to clear your mind so that the look can travel through your head.”
Even co-star Owen Wilson has given into its power, gamely mimicking it for fans, even though his character Hanzel has nothing to do with it.
“Finally I was like, it’s easier just to do it, and so I do my version of it," he said.
“Zoolander 2” hits theaters nationwide on Friday.
