Christopher Nolan has been a materialist his entire career. From his preference of film over digital to his reliance on practical effects, he’s brought back the now-rare kind of craftsmanship that existed with greats, like the oft-compared director Stanley Kubrick. So far, Nolan’s flipped a truck in the middle of a downtown Chicago street for “The Dark Knight,” built and rigged a hallway to spin for “Inception” and physically constructed the fifth dimension in “Interstellar.” Well, all of that may be trumped by his next stunt for “Dunkirk.”

According to a reported rumor on Indie Revolver, “A source tells me that Warner Brothers recently signed a five million dollar check to purchase a vintage WW2 aircraft, (possibly a German Luftwafee) which will be outfitted with IMAX cameras to be used in what are sure to be some impressive sequences in the film. And when they’re done, they are going to crash it.”
Echoing the stunning IMAX shots rigged to the spaceships of his last film and the daring airplane stunts in the opening sequence of the film prior, this stunt, if real, both feels shockingly surprising and completely right, and would seem to be the amalgamation of his practical effects efforts — before he most likely tops it in whatever he does next. We all knew that he would never be satisfied with a CGI crash.
“Dunkirk” follows the events of Operation Dynamo, in which over 300,000 Allied soldiers were rescued from the beaches of the French title city after being surrounded by the German military. The film is set to release on July 21, 2017.
