Report: Selena Gomez’s Grandparents Confirm Singer ‘In Treatment’ For Lupus

Reports have swirled for a while that ex-Disney starlet Selena Gomez was battling lupus. But her family has stayed mostly quiet about it - until now.

In a recent interview with RadarOnline, the singer's grandparents reportedly confirmed she is “in treatment” for the immune disease.

The 21-year-old’s grandparents Ricardo and Mary Gomez spoke exclusively with the gossip site, saying the singer was diagnosed “a couple of years ago,” but it was not until late last year that it truly affected her life.

In December, the “Come and Get It” singer cancelled several tour dates overseas and subsequently – and secretly – entered rehab in Arizona for several days.

“She was working a lot,” Ricardo Gomez said. “She was exhausted. She hardly takes some time out. There was some pressure, first because it’s a lot of work.”

The doctor was telling her she needs to take some time out,” he continued. “It’s just too much pressure what she’s going through. It’s just too much! She doesn’t have a single day’s break.”

The singer is currently traveling in Nepal as an ambassador for UNICEF.

As for battling lupus, Ricardo Gomez said the singer is “in treatment.”

“She’s getting along pretty good,” he said. “What worries (us) more is that she doesn’t know how to say no. She won’t take time for herself to relax, to eat well.”

During the interview, the singer’s grandparents opened up about her growing up and when she received her first TV offers with “Barney” and then on Disney’s “Wizards of Waverly Place.”

“She was one of the kids, not sitting in one place for a while, just always doing something, homemade movies, always acting and singing,” her grandfather said.

He said that while they were involved when she was growing up and were very close, over the last couple of months, visits have dwindled to a point that the last time they saw her was in November.

“The sad part is we hardly see her nowadays, just by phone,” he said. “When we talk on the phone we say, ‘We don’t see you in person but we see you in the news, in the newspaper, the TV… Are you okay?’ She says, ‘Yeah.’”
