Zambian authorities arrest 2 suspected poachers who face murder charges in ranger killing

Published January 08, 2015

A group that runs African wildlife parks says two suspected poachers have been arrested for the shooting death of the head of law enforcement at a park in Zambia.

The Johannesburg-based group, African Parks, said Tuesday that the men face charges including murder and that information provided by outraged local residents helped authorities detain them. A reward of nearly $10,000 was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter.

Ranger Dexter Chilunda was killed on May 23 while investigating reports of gunshots in Liuwa Plain National Park. The suspects were arrested on Sunday, about 35 kilometers (22 miles) from the park.
