Yemen's government accepts UN invite for talks with Shiite Houthi rebels

Yemen's government spokesman says it has accepted an invitation from United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to discuss the implementation of a U.N. resolution that calls for the end of the fighting.

Rajeh Badi says Monday the government will attend talks in Geneva at the end of this month with the Houthi rebels.

Badi says the government will discuss the unconditional implementation of a Security Council resolution that require the Houthis to withdraw from all areas they control and lay down arms captured in months of fighting.

The U.N. said earlier this month that the rebels have accepted the resolution.

The Houthis have long resisted calls to withdraw from all areas they have seized, a key part of the April resolution.

Previous attempts at peace talks have failed.
