Tens of thousands of Yemenis are rallying in a southern city, demanding the secession of the south from the rest of the country.

The protesters in the port city of Aden are demanding the return of the one-time independent state of South Yemen.

Monday's demonstration comes as Yemen's warring sides are to meet in Kuwait for talks on resolving the year-long conflict between the internationally-recognized government, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, and the country's Shiite Houthi rebels and their allies.

A U.N.-brokered cease-fire announced earlier this month to facilitate the negotiations in Kuwait has repeatedly been breached by both sides.

Yemen's crisis has killed thousands and displaced 2.4 million people.

It has also fueled the aspirations among the Southerners' for independence, which they had before Yemen was unified in 1990.
