Witnesses: Students protest spending, subsidy cuts

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

Witnesses say Sudanese riot police have used tear gas to break up a small demonstration of students at the University of Khartoum. They were protesting government plans to cut fuel subsidies and raise public transportation fares, among steps to cut government spending.

The witnesses said police vehicles were stationed at intersections leading to the downtown Khartoum campus during the disturbance Wednesday. There were no reports of casualties or arrests.

On Monday, President Omar al-Bashir announced austerity measures, noting that Sudan is no longer an oil exporter and must cut its spending. He also pointed to the expense of a conflict with South Sudan, which gained independence last year. The two countries are at odds over issues like oil and borders.

No major protests against the cuts were reported.
