The first candidate vying to replace Ban Ki-moon as United Nations Secretary General has dropped out of the race.
Danijel Medan, deputy permanent representative of Croatia, said Thursday that Vesna Pusic was no longer a candidate to succeed Ban, who will step down after two terms at the end of the year.
Pusic, a former Croatian foreign minister, received only two votes encouraging her candidacy and 11 votes discouraging it, the worst showing of the 12 candidates in a straw poll conducted by the Security Council in July.
According to the U.N. Charter, the secretary-general is chosen by the 193-member General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council.
Another straw poll is scheduled for Friday.
