Venezuela's Chavez unveils image of Bolivar's face

Published November 20, 2014

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has unveiled a new, photograph-like portrait of 19th century independence leader Simon Bolivar.

A team of researchers produced the image based on studies of Bolivar's remains. Chavez unveiled two separate images of Bolivar's face during an event at the presidential palace, accompanied by aides and a group of children.

Bolivar is the namesake of Chavez's Bolivarian Revolution movement, and his government is putting the finishing touches on a new mausoleum to house Bolivar's remains.

The portrait was unveiled on Tuesday, the 229th anniversary of Bolivar's birth.

Chavez also said researchers' studies of Bolivar's remains so far have found no evidence of tuberculosis, which historians have thought was the cause of death.
