US urges travelers not to use Galaxy Note 7 on flight

The U.S. aviation regulator is urging travelers not to use the Galaxy Note 7 phone on flights following battery explosions that prompted Samsung to issue an unprecedented recall.

The Federation Aviation Agency said Friday that passengers are strongly advised not to turn on or charge the Note 7 phones while flying. It also said the phones should not be stowed in checked baggage.

Last week, Samsung recalled 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7 smartphones after confirming 35 cases of its batteries catching fire. Most explosions occurred while the battery was being charged. The phone was released Aug. 19.

The South Korean company said South Korean consumers will be able to swap their Note 7 phones for a new one starting later this month. The recall schedules vary across countries.
