US seeks urgent UN Security Council meeting on North Korea missile firings

The United States has asked for an urgent meeting of the U.N. Security Council on North Korea following its test-firing of two medium-range ballistic missiles in violations of council resolutions.

Luxembourg, which holds the council presidency this month, tweeted Wednesday that U.N. political chief Jeffrey Feltman would brief the council Thursday afternoon.

The launch of the Rodong missiles on Wednesday — for the first time since 2009 — violates U.N. resolutions banning ballistic missile launches and marks a major escalation from a series of shorter-range rocket launches the North has staged in recent weeks to protest ongoing annual military drills by the U.S. and South Korea. Pyongyang claims the drills are preparation for an invasion.

It was unclear what kind of response the U.S. is seeking from the Security Council.
