US seeks big boost in global refugee support funds

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says the Obama administration will seek a major boost in funding for global refugee support and press for at least 10 new countries to offer resettlement programs.

Speaking Friday at the World Economic Forum, Kerry said the U.S. will encourage donors to increase by 30 percent financing for worldwide humanitarian appeals, from $10 billion to $13 billion a year. He said the U.S. will also push countries that currently accept refugees to double the number they resettle, increase the number of refugees in school by 1 million and the number of refugees legally allowed to work by 1 million.

He said these calls will be a centerpiece of a refugee summit President Barack Obama plans to host at the U.N. General Assembly this fall.
