UN says first 9 aid trucks enter Syria from Turkey without government's approval

A U.N. official says nine trucks carrying humanitarian supplies have entered Syria from Turkey, using one of four border crossings recently authorized by the U.N. Security Council to speed delivery of aid to millions in need.

Amanda Pitt, spokeswoman for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said Thursday the trucks that went through the Bab al-Salam crossing contained food, water purification tablets and sanitation and shelter materials.

"It is, I believe, the first convoy going into Syria through one of the four border crossings under the U.N. Security Council resolution," she said.

The council unanimously approved a resolution on July 14 authorizing cross-border delivery of aid to Syrians in rebel-held areas without government approval through two crossings in Turkey, one in Jordan and one in Iraq.
