UN refugee agency: 14 Eritrean asylum seekers abducted by armed group in eastern Sudan

Published June 05, 2015

Associated Press

The United Nations' refugee agency says 14 Eritrean asylum seekers have been abducted in an attack on a refugee convoy in eastern Sudan.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees said an armed group in a pickup truck opened fire Thursday on a convoy that was transporting 49 Eritreans from a reception center to a refugee camp. It said seven unaccompanied children were kidnapped — six boys and one girl — along with five women and two men.

Another six asylum seekers sustained minor injuries as they jumped from their truck in an effort to escape. UNHCR on Friday described the assailants as "unknown armed elements" and said that Sudanese authorities are investigating.

The convoy attacked was organized by the Sudanese Commissioner for Refugees.
