UN Peacekeeper Dies in Lebanon Accident

Published November 17, 2014

Associated Press

BEIRUT-- A spokesman for the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Lebanon says a peacekeeper has been killed and another injured during "operational activity" in southern Lebanon.

Lt. Col. Naresh Bhatt says Tuesday's accident occurred in the vicinity of the town of Kfar Chouba where a UNIFIL engineering company was carrying out works.

He says the injured peacekeeper was evacuated for medical treatment and that the circumstances of the accident are under investigation.

Bhatt did not give the nationality of the two soldiers but Lebanon's state-run National News Agency said the dead was a French peacekeeper.

The U.N. peacekeeping force was deployed in southern Lebanon after the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war.
