UN official describes atrocities pitting Christians vs. Muslims in Central African Republic

A top U.N. humanitarian official says indescribable atrocities are being committed against innocent civilians in the collapsing Central African Republic where Muslim and Christian fighters have started targeting each other's followers.

John Ging says the new religious dimension to the conflict has instilled "incredible fear" among civilians. The director of U.N. humanitarian operations recently returned from the beleaguered country.

Central African Republic has been in turmoil since a coalition of rebel groups joined forces to overthrow the president in March and put their leader in charge.

Ging said Tuesday that over half the country's 4.6 million people need humanitarian assistance. He said the suffering is "among the worst in the world" and said "it's getting worse."
