UN: Moroccan peacekeeper killed in Central African Republic

The U.N. says a Moroccan peacekeeper has been killed by unknown gunmen in Central African Republic.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the killing Monday. A statement from his office said the peacekeeper was shot Sunday in the town of Rafai, located in the country's southeast near Democratic Republic of Congo.

The peacekeeper was responding to an attack on a nearby village allegedly carried out by elements of the Lord's Resistance Army, the rebel group led by Joseph Kony that originated in Uganda in the 1980s.

Ban urged Central African Republic President Faustin Archange Touadera's government to bring to justice those responsible for the peacekeeper's death. Touadera was sworn into office in late March, becoming the first elected leader since Muslim rebels toppled the government three years ago.
