UN investigating reported device blast in Lebanon

The U.N. peacekeeping force in south Lebanon says it is investigating a blast reportedly caused by the detonation of an Israeli device spying on Hezbollah's private telecommunications network.

The militant Hezbollah group said Friday it discovered what it said was an Israeli device in the southern village of Majdel Silim.

Both the group and the Lebanese army said the device was apparently detonated remotely by the Israelis.

UNIFIL spokesman Neeraj Singh said an investigating team was dispatched Saturday to the location of the reported explosion to look into the incident and determine whether there was any violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

Hezbollah has its own separate telecommunications network believed to link its positions and command centers throughout the country.
