UN envoy: 2-state Israel-Palestinian solution in peril

Published March 24, 2016

Associated Press

The U.N.'s top Mideast envoy is warning that a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict "is slipping through our fingers" as a result of Israel's settlement-building and confiscation of Palestinian land, and the lack of Palestinian unity.

Nickolay Mladenov told the Security Council on Thursday that the current wave of violence "which is tearing Israelis and Palestinians apart" is another factor "dangerously imperiling" the two-state solution.

He says the Quartet of Mideast mediators — the U.N., U.S., European Union and Russia — believes that a two-state solution remains the best path to peace and is stepping up efforts to break the political impasse.

Mladenov says Quartet envoys are preparing a report that will review the situation on the ground, identify dangers to a two-state solution and recommend the way forward.
