UN eases sanctions on non-lethal military aid to Libya but warns of illegal weapons threat

The U.N. Security Council is easing sanctions on non-lethal military equipment for the Libyan government but warns that the country is awash with illegal weapons that are having a negative impact on regional and international peace.

A resolution adopted unanimously by the council on Thursday welcomes last July's national elections in Libya and the establishment of a General National Congress, but it expresses serious concern at escalating security incidents and reports of sexual violence and human rights violations.

The resolution, which extends the U.N. political mission in Libya for a year, also authorizes the council committee monitoring sanctions against Libya to lift an asset freeze against the Libyan Investment Authority and the Libyan Africa Investment Portfolio "as soon as practical" and ensure the assets are used to help Libya's people.
