UN chief visits Portugal, hears about successor candidate

Published May 12, 2016

Associated Press

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is in Lisbon for meetings with senior Portuguese officials, who are campaigning for the country's candidate to replace him, Antonio Guterres.

Ban met Thursday with Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva but did not speak to reporters. He was also due to have a private dinner with Prime Minister Antonio Costa. Both Portuguese officials are keen to see Guterres succeed Ban, who concludes his term at the end of this year.

Guterres was Portugal's center-left Socialist prime minister from 1995-2002. He was for a decade the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, until the end of last year. He is one of an expected dozen candidates to become the next secretary-general, who will be chosen by the General Assembly on the recommendation of the 15-member Security Council.
