UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Senior U.N. officials say the secretary-general is launching an internal review of the U.N.'s self-policing while nominating a Canadian woman to take over its internal watchdog agency.
Staff chief Vijay Nambiar told colleagues in an internal memo obtained by The Associated Press on Monday that Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon "is conducting a review of the U.N. ability to investigate itself."
Officials say Ban sent his nomination to the General Assembly on Friday and could name the still unidentified woman as early as Monday.
She would replace Sweden's Inga-Britt Ahlenius as head of the Office of Internal Oversight Services.
Ahlenius' 50-page confidential memo to Ban this month at the end of her five-year term blasted his leadership.
