UN chief: nations must back Libya no-fly zone

The United Nations chief on Tuesday called on all nations to support efforts to impose a no-fly zone over Libya.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that the U.N.'s Security Council passed the resolution authorizing the use of force after Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi "was deliberately and indiscriminately killing his own people."

"Thousands of lives are still at stake. We could well see a further humanitarian emergency," Ban said.

Ban spoke at a news conference after a daylong visit with post-revolutionary leaders in Tunisia, Libya's neighbor.

Ban said that once the U.N. Security Council adopted the resolution "all the members of the United Nations have an obligation to fully cooperate so that this resolution will be implemented."

Gadhafi "cannot and should not and must not fight alone against" the international community, Ban said.
