UN chief calls on Syria to allow UN team to investigate alleged chemical weapons attack

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is calling on the Syrian government to allow a U.N. team now in Damascus to swiftly investigate the alleged use of chemical weapons outside the capital.

U.N. deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey says Ban remains "deeply troubled" by the alleged chemical weapons attack on the eastern suburbs of Damascus on Wednesday and believes it needs to be investigated "without delay."

The U.N. chief has been in touch with world leaders since Wednesday and is sending U.N. disarmament chief Angela Kane to Damascus to press for a U.N. investigation, the spokesman said Thursday.

Del Buey said the secretary-general "takes positive note" of the Security Council's meeting Wednesday backing his call for "a thorough, impartial and prompt investigation."

The attack killed at least 100 people.
