UN chemical weapons investigators departing imminently for Syria, agreement reached

The United Nations says a team of experts will depart for Syria imminently to investigate allegations of chemical weapons use.

U.N. deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey said Wednesday that Syria has accepted arrangements for the U.N. experts to investigate. Under the agreement, del Buey says the team will remain in the country for "up to 14 days, extendable upon mutual consent." The visit will include "on-site visits."

The U.N. approved the investigation on July 31 following an "understanding" with Syria that it would include three sites where chemical weapons were allegedly used, including the village of Khan al Assal near Aleppo.

Del Buey said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon believes an effective investigation of allegations can serve as "an important deterrent" against the use of chemical weapons.
