UN agency prepares for its largest aid shipment to Syria, sending 43 containers from Dubai

The United Nations refugee agency says it plans to send its aid largest shipment yet to Syria.

UNHCR Senior Logistics officer Soliman Daud says 43 shipping containers full of relief supplies will leave Dubai's Jebel Ali port and travel through the Suez Canal before landing in Tartous, Syria. He declined to say where the aid would be distributed once in Syria, but says the UNHCR is working with partners on the ground such as the Syrian Red Crescent in the western part of the country.

Aid workers began loading containers from the organization's massive warehouses in Dubai on Thursday. Daud says the shipment takes between two to three weeks to reach Syria's port.

The shipment includes tens of thousands of jerry cans, sleeping mats, kitchen sets, blankets and plastic sheets.
