Ukrainian official says judge kept bribes in a jar

Published August 10, 2016

Associated Press

A top Ukrainian prosecutor says a judge has been caught taking a $150,000 bribe and that he stashed his money in a humble glass jar, a phot of which went viral on social media.

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau had said Tuesday the judge of the District Court in the eastern city of Dnipro was caught red-handed receiving the bribe. On Wednesday, Deputy Prosecutor General Nazar Kholodnytsky said they'd detained the judge but cannot arrest him because of his immunity from prosecution. The Ukrainian parliament, which could have issued a waiver, is in recess.

Kholodnytsky posted Wednesday a picture of a jar filled with dollar banknotes, claiming it was "crucial physical evidence" of how some Ukrainian judges "keep their corrupt income."

The photo was widely shared on social media in Ukraine.
