Britain's Ministry of Defense says a soldier injured in Afghanistan has died from his wounds at a U.K. hospital.

The defense ministry says the soldier from 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment was wounded by enemy action on Jan. 14 while serving in the Lashkar Gah district of Helmand Province.

It said the soldier was flown back to England for treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where he succumbed to his wounds on Wednesday.

The defense ministry did not name the soldier, but said his next of kin have been informed.

The death brings to 440 the number of British personnel killed in Afghanistan since 2001.
