UK politician suspended from party for not apologizing to harassment accusers

A member of Britain's House of Lords tarred by sexual harassment allegations has been suspended from his party after refusing to apologize to his accusers.

Liberal Democrat Chris Rennard was accused of molesting four women in incidents dating back to 2003 — allegations he denies. An internal inquiry found that the women's claims were credible but could not be proved beyond a reasonable doubt.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg — leader of the Liberal Democrats — had insisted Rennard apologize before retaking his seat in the House of Lords. Rennard has refused.

The party said Monday that Rennard will be investigated for "bringing the party into disrepute on the grounds of his failure to apologize, as recommended" by the internal inquiry and has been suspended pending a disciplinary procedure.
