Uganda: 2 convicted of al-Shabab's deadly World Cup bombings

A judge has convicted two men of carrying out twin bombings in which more than 70 people were killed while watching the 2010 World Cup final in the Ugandan capital Kampala.

The two could face the death penalty.

Judge Alphonse Owiny Dollo said Thursday that Ugandan Issa Luyima was the mastermind of the July 2010 attacks, for which the Somali Islamic extremist group al-Shabab claimed responsibility.

Luyima and Kenyan Hussein Hassan Agade were convicted of terrorism. They are part of a group of 13 men, including Kenyans and Tanzanians, who faced multiple charges of terrorism, murder and belonging to a terror group. The other suspects await verdicts.
