A British grandmother spoke of her guilt after she escaped from her burning home with the family dogs -- but forgot to rescue her grandchild, The Coventry Telegraph reported Tuesday.

Mandy Hands and her son Ashley, 16, woke Monday at 7:20am to find their home on fire in Coventry, central England, and quickly made their escape with the family dogs.

Both forgot that 11-year-old Curtis was asleep in their spare bedroom.

The boy was later rescued by firefighters and all three were treated in hospital after inhaling toxic smoke fumes.

Hands, 45, said: "I can’t get over the fact I left my grandson in bed.

"He’s visiting from Portsmouth (southeastern England) and I was panicking so much trying to get everyone out that I forgot he was here. I never even checked on him.

"It was only when we were outside and someone said ‘is there anyone else in there?’ that I remembered him, but no one could get back in.

"I stood outside shouting up at the bedroom window and that was when the fire engines arrived."

It is believed a faulty toaster used by Hands’ husband or eldest son before they left for work caused the blaze.
