Typhoon Goni leaves at least 3 dead in northern Philippines

Officials say at least three people have died, including a 10-year-old boy, from landslides triggered by heavy rains from a powerful typhoon pummeling the northern Philippines.

Government weather forecaster Adzar Aurelio said Typhoon Goni was still at sea on Friday afternoon about 100 kilometers (62 miles) east of northern Calayan Island, with maximum sustained winds of 170 kilometers per hour (105 mph) and gusts of up to 205 kph (127 mph).

Aurelio said it is moving at 7 kph (4 mph) and may pass over tiny islands at the country's northern tip.

Civil defense official Andrew Alex Uy said a mother and her two sons were hit by a landslide in northern Mountain Province which killed the 10-year-old son and injured his 9-year-old brother.
