Toxic gas leaks from tank in warehouse in Brazil

Published January 14, 2016

Associated Press

Officials say toxic gas has leaked from tanks in a cargo warehouse in the Brazilian coastal city of Guaruja.

The Guaruja fire department says rainwater seeped into the container where the tanks containing sodium chloride isocyanate were stored, causing a chemical reaction that sent a large white cloud into the sky.

Guaruja Mayor Maria de Antonieta de Brito is asking people to stay home because the gas can cause skin irritation, burning sensations and fainting spells.

The gas leak took place Thursday in a privately owned warehouse storage facility.

The fire department said several people experienced breathing difficulties and were treated at a local hospital.
