Top Green Party figures resign after poor result in German election

Senior figures in Germany's left-leaning Green Party say they are stepping down from the party leadership after its poor result in Sunday's general election.

Juergen Trittin, one of the party's two leaders in Parliament, announced Tuesday he was stepping down and wouldn't stand again for the post.

This follows the resignation of party chairwoman Claudia Roth after a lackluster campaign that saw the party's vote drop to 8.4 percent from 10.7 percent in 2009.

The Greens are one of two possible coalition partners for Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative bloc, which won the election with 41.5 percent of the vote.

The leader of the Bavarian branch of Merkel's Union, Horst Seehofer, warns his party won't negotiate with the current Green leadership and prefers an alliance with the center-left Social Democratic Party.
