Toledo leads among Peruvian presidential hopefuls

Former President Alejandro Toledo tops the field of presidential candidates for April elections, favored by 27 percent in a new opinion poll.

Trailing are former Lima Mayor Luis Castaneda with 22 percent and Congresswoman Keiko Fujimori with 20 percent. Fujimori's father is jailed former President Alberto Fujimori.

The Peruvian polling firm Datum conducted 1,202 face-to-face interviews in 114 Peruvian cities and towns Jan. 7-10. The poll was published in the newspaper Peru 21 on Friday, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.

Toledo is a Stanford-trained economist of humble origins whose 2001-2006 presidency witnessed strong financial growth although the wealth did not spread much among Peru's poor.
