Thousands protest in Beirut over Lebanon's trash crisis

Thousands of people are protesting in Beirut demanding a solution for the country's eight-month trash crisis.

The Saturday afternoon protest near the government headquarters occurred as the Cabinet was holding a meeting in an attempt to end the crisis by opening several new landfills.

The protesters reject that option and demand a permanent recycling plan.

Beirut streets have been kept relatively garbage-free, which has helped pacify the public, and the trash has been pushed to the city's periphery, where it piles up along the roadside and the banks of the Beirut River.

"We are fed up," chanted the more than 2,000 protesters who vowed to escalate on Monday by "paralyzing the movement in the country."

Some protesters wore black T-shirts with a slogan that reads the "government of trash."
